The Garonga Diaries: Cakes, Cats and Coaches!

Dear Diary!

This week is going to rank, most definitely, as a great week! The ultimate highlight has to be that Bernie has introduced a weekly “cake day” (Fridays for those who are interested) and so each week the fabulous Reineth will keep her skills razor sharp – and our sanity and salivary glands in action – by rustling up a sweet delight in the kitchen!

The Safari Squad has kept up with the practical training, which reached new heights this week as Elia introduced us to the mysterious goings on underneath the safari Landrovers – so I suppose we technically reached new lows as well, depending on how you choose to look at things! The vehicles even gave us a helping hand as a genuine flat battery puzzle gave us the chance to flex our burgeoning muscles and put our knowledge to the test. Happily (with a smidgen of help from Elia) we passed with flying colours. Before long, Bernie will have a team of true grease monkeys on his hands!

We also celebrated the 50th anniversary of Earth Day this week. The morning’s bush clearing activities helped to underpin our efforts to minimise our impact on the environment. By clearing sections of the roads that are overgrown we are helping to limit erosion by preventing new tracks springing up around the obstructions. We also use the branches we cut down to pack around areas where the erosion has started to concentrate. The branches help to slow the speed of the water and reduce the damage it causes in sensitive environmental areas! We were rewarded for our good deeds by a wonderful sighting of Kalahari Junior, one of the resident dominant male lions, patrolling his territory and showing off his vocals for us as he searched for his brother. Happily, he has made a full recovery from his injuries a few weeks ago.

In more alarming news, the fitness frenzy appears to have begun to spread from Bernie, Josia and Bongi. If the reports are true, it has infiltrated the Office Team! As the squad carry out their daily duties a humming undercurrent of health has crept in. Rumour has it that Lorraine (Safari Camp’s Manager) is somewhat of a ringleader, coaching the ladies in the optimum dead-lift form. Are they angling to challenge the three amigos? Who will be struck by the fitness frenzy next? Only time will tell!
